I decided to make a recipe from the little booklet that came with my crock pot. I wanted to make Beef Bourguignon after being inspired by the movie Julie & Julia. I found this recipe in the booklet and decided to make it.
Ingredients:
-3 tablespoons flour
-Kosher salt and pepper
-3 pounds beef chuck, cut into 1-inch cubes (my husband cut this because he doesn't like me using a big knife lol)
-3 large carrots, peeled and sliced (love my vegetable peeler, it worked so well!)
-1 medium onion, sliced
-6 strips cooked bacon, cut into 1-2 inch pieces (I used turkey bacon pre-cooked in the microwave)
- 1 10 ounce can beef broth (I used Campbell's condensed - don't know if that makes a difference)
-2 cups red or Burgundy wine (the bottle of burgundy wine was less expensive than the cooking burgundy)
-1 tablespoon tomato paste
-2 cloves of garlic, minced
-3 sprigs fresh thyme, stemmed (I used the thyme in my spice rack)
-1 bay leaf
-1 pound fresh mushrooms sliced
-2 large potatoes, cut into 1-inch pieces
Directions:
1. Coat beef in flour seasoned with salt and pepper. (I at first put all the beef in the flour mixture and that wasn't a good idea. I wound have having to get more flour and seasoning and do the meat cubes individually. This is really messy!) Sear beef in a skillet on stovetop (optional) (I didn't do this).
2. Place meat in Crock Pot slow cooker and add remaining ingredients.
3. Cover and cook on Low for 8-10 hours or on High for 5-7 hours, or until meat is tender.
Verdict: This seems to be way to much to put a 6 qt crock pot. Everything I have read or heard has said that the crock pot should be no more than 2/3 full. This almost toppled the crock pot. I added some of the ingredients during the cooking because there was just too much in the crock pot. I don't know if the stuff needed to be cut smaller or what. The meat was very tender. My favorite part was drinking the juice after I ate all the ingredients. I have no idea why they want you to add cooked bacon. I don't think the bacon added anything to this dish and I must say were not very tasty. I'm not sure if I'll make this recipe again. I hope to find a better one.
